Biography

Dr Bärbel Papassotiropoulos has led the clinical research unit and coordinated quality assurance at the Zurich Breast Center since 2007. Through these roles, she significantly contributes to maintaining and advancing clinical quality as well as to research and the implementation of new therapies and treatment options for breast cancer. She has extensive expertise in quality assurance for certifications under both the Swiss Q-label and the DKG (German Cancer Society). She speaks German, English and Greek.

Dr Papassotiropoulos studied human medicine at the University of Bonn, Germany, from 1989 to 1995. From 1996 to 2000, she worked as a surgical resident at Marienhospital in Bonn and as a resident and locum physician in the anaesthesiology department at Dardenne Clinic. From 2018 to 2019, she completed advanced training in psychosocial oncology (WPO/DKG) and has been offering psycho-oncological consultations for the Zurich Cancer League since January 2020.

She has published several articles on various topics, including ‘Detection of residual glandular breast tissue after nipple-sparing and skin-sparing mastectomy’, ‘Prediction of pathological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy using ultrasound’ and ‘Effects of intraoperative frozen section examination in clinically node-negative (cN0/ycN0) breast cancer patients after neoadjuvant systemic therapy’. These publications make a valuable contribution to breast cancer treatment.

As a member of the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK) and the Swiss Society of Senology (SGS), she also contributes to the ongoing development and improvement of cancer research and treatment in Switzerland.
